RTI also has an active presence in standards organizations, including the Object Management Group (OMG) and Open Group, Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium (NCOIC). RTI served as the primary author for the OMG's Data Distribution Service (DDS) for Real-Time Systems standard. DDS standardizes the software application program interface (API) by which a distributed application can use Data-Centric Publish/Subscribe (DCPS) communication.

Founded by Stanford University scientists in 1991, RTI is privately held and headquartered in Silicon Valley.
